Google Translator can now be used with a greatly expanded number of languages for web site promotion
Google Translate is based a machine method of translation that is based on more than 10 years of United Nations translation transcripts. Google has quite an edge in the area of machine translation, because of it’s search engine database technology.
Google says that the number of total languages in Google Translator has recently increased by 285 to a total of 345 !
I had no idea there were even that many languages in existence. Apparently, the additional language surge is mostly due to regional, indigenous, or threatened languages, which are only spoken in a very localized area.
Ironically, I wonder how many of those languages have computer users that could take advantage of the new translators ?
Of course this is not the point. Google says it is trying to help preserve these small language groups. By saving recollections from elders in these groups, they are helping to preserve local culture that can be taught to children who will certainly have access to computers in their lifetime.
It is also claimed that an automatic translation helps translators to work more quickly. I can attest to this, since when I send e-mail in French, I find it faster to type in English, let the Google translator do it’s thing, and then fix whatever needs adjustment. I wish they would add an option to change the polite form to the familiar, so that I would not have to change all of the vous to tu, as well as the corresponding verbs.
Google Translator is a great way to add the option of translation to users who are not familiar with your native language. It is a good advantage to web site promotion to add a link to Google language tools
