Where can good links for web site promotion be found, and how can bad links be avoided ?

It has been estimated by various types of web site promotion research that inbound or back links account for between 60-70 percent of the page rank for web sites. In order to do valuable Site SEO as well as develop off-page links, it needs to be determined what types of links are beneficial and what types are detrimental to SEO efforts.

Ideally, you would like to have a whole team of links pointing to your web site, like the little guys shown here. This will greatly help increase both search engine position and page rank.

Clearly links to sites with no page rank offer no benefit or limited benefit. Sites that do not follow good SEO practice should be avoided at all costs, since linking to them may actually inur a penalty. It is unwise to link to a site that offers no useful content, or sites that are filled mainly with advertising. Sites that offer paid links should be avoided at all costs.

This advice is sound for links from the body of the web site, as well as from the comments section. Your web site promotion may suffer somewhat, even from a link in your comments section to a site of little merit.

Always review comments carefully. Someone may say good things about your site, but don’t hesitate to remove their comment, if their link is to a site that appears to be without content, or seems questionable.

Just as you pay close attention to the content on your own site, pay attention to sites you allow to link to your site for good web site promotion results. Evaluate carefully each comment to make sure not only to remove spam, but to see if the comment is from a legitimate source. Over time as you produce good content, you will notice that higher quality comments and links will naturally occur.

The very best type of link for web site promotion is a link from an authority site, (high page rank), that links to your site using one of your main keywords. Your site will likely receive a boost in search engine position, as well as a substantial increase in traffic. These are highly coveted links, that only come on rare occaisons.

If your site is reviewed by a site of authority, especially a site with a similar type of content to yours, and the link is to your home page, this will boost your web site promotion as well. If you ever find a positive comment from an author or work similar to your own do not hesitate to ask if it might be possible for you to write a guest post for their site.

This benefits the author of the other site because it saves them time, and it benefits you if they will allow you to link to your site, (which they should offer, in exchange for a free post from you.)

What other types of links can you pursue in your web site promotion strategy ? Directories are a good source of links, but do not submit to 100 different directories all at once. The traffic as well as the link benefit from most of them will be inconsequential. Choose 5 or 10 of the best quality directories that you can find, and submit your site only to a select group. Make sure to include Blog Catalog and StumbleUpon on your list.

You can also comment on other blogs, forums, as long as you contribute constructive comments to the discussion. Don’t be shy about expressing your opinion, that’s what blogs are for, but make sure that it is directly related to the post, and nothing else.

Do not promote yourself at all, or your comment will be deleted. You can use all your insight, wit and creativity in a relevant comment, that will speak for itself. Of course a link to your web site is all important so make sure to leave one.

Some sites may require you to register, some may not, but all will require your name and e-mail address. It is more professional to use an e-mail address from your web site than a generic address. Most blogs will not display your e-mail address, but will require it to be provided.

If there is a line where you can list your web site, make sure to use it. Even is there is no space for a web site address, you can still use http://[name of your web site] in the comments box, Google will still read the link.

Try some of these ideas, on a regular basis, and you will find an increasing number of links to your web site that will benefit your web site promotion.

Good Luck in your SEO efforts !
