What are the methods to search top keywords for your web site marketing campaign?

Everyone who does web site marketing or web site promotion has some idea that the search for top keywords is important. Where is the best place to search top keywords?

The answer to that question depends on your web site promotion method. Do you have a product or a service advertised on Google Adwords ? If you do, then go straight to the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

If you are using organic, or natural search methods, then you will be better off using the free WordTracker Tool. This will give you a very good estimate of the popularity of your top keywords. If there is no traffic for certain keywords, there is no reason to promote them on your web site.

What is meant by organic search?  These are the the search engine results in the middle of the page, in large text.  Paid results, on the other hand are on the very top and, usually, the right hand side of the page.  These ad links are highlighted in a separate box on Google search pages, and the words “Sponsored Links” always appear in that area.

You can discover top search keywords using Wordtracker. Just type wordtracker free, in Google, and click on the first listing. You will go to the Wordtracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool. Type your keywords in the keyword box, and then click the Hit Me button.

The number given as a result, is the number of daily searches for those keywords on the Internet. If you find that there is a daily search of 50-100 searches, or more, then you may have found good top search keywords for your web site promotion blog.

The first step described above is very easy, but the second step is a little bit more complex. Now that you have searched top keywords that have a reasonable amount of traffic, how competitive are these keywords ? This may be something that you never considered before, but it is very important.

How are you going to determine how hard you will have to work to make your web site promotion blog a success ? It is critical to your web site marketing that you begin your campaign with this knowledge, or you may never achieve the kinds of results that you desire.

If I end this post, and tell you that you need to hire a search engine optimization consultant at this point, I know I will have a number of frustrated visitors leaving me angry comments on my blog. I would not leave you hanging like that. Do not worry. .

Seriously though, this is the kind of thing that SEO specialists do very well. The search for top keywords is something SEO Guys do all the time. A very few of them are so experienced at it, they do really great keyword research, that is invaluable for their clients.

You may not have access to all of the tools and techniques that an SEO Expert has, but let’s use the free information available from Google, to get an approximate idea of the competitiveness of our chosen search keywords

Type in your keywords into Google. You will see a large number in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Do not become alarmed that the number may be very large. This is only an index of the total number of sites that mention your keywords on their site. You are not actually competing with every one of these sites.

Your real competition is roughly the top 50 or 100 web sites for these keywords. It has been estimated that between 50-70 percent of search engine results is based on the type and quality of one way links to your web site. These links are also called incoming or back links.

We may not be able to check all of the links to a competitor’s web site, but at least, we can count the total number of back links using a Google search command. This will give us a clear indication of how much effort we will have to make to create enough back links to compete with this site. Remember this is an approximation for a rough comparison, and it is  not an absolutely number.

The command to do this works in this way: Type link:http://www.competitor-web-site.com Use the link command followed by a colon, followed by the complete Internet address of URL of the web site. You can copy and past the URL name into the Google search box, so you don’t get any misspelling.

This number will be a good indication of how competitive this site is, when it comes to back links. If you see that that the site has 10,000 or 200,000 or 1,000,000 links, you can bet the site is very competitive in search engine rankings. If the site has only a few dozen or even 100 links, you have got a real chance at competition with that site.

I hope this information proves beneficial to your marketing efforts.

Best of luck in your US web site promotions !
